THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, which are active compounds found in the cannabis plant. There are at least 113 different cannabinoids appearing in cannabis, of which THC and CBD are currently the most widely known and well researched.
The most relevant differences between the two compounds for our purposes, are whether or not they are psychoactive and legal.THC has psychoactive effects. Thus, it is known as the compound in cannabis that makes people “high”. CBD however, is not psychoactive, and will not render these effects.
Many of the laws that regulate cannabis revolve around THC content. In most cases THC is restricted and products that contain THC are illegal. In South Africa, a product with more than 0.001% THC is considered illegal. On the other hand, CBD is less restricted, and products containing CBD are legal to buy and use.
